Hi, great work there, wish you the best of luck in this program which could be implemented in many other places.
Would that be possible to see the business plan of the whole concept somewhere ? Very interested in it, especially to see if you consider the financial balance of the project just on collection or on reuse of excreta as well. How much costs the toilet itself ? Is that build locally ? Do you have plans or more explanations of the design, we see on the video that there is black liquid in the box, is that made to prevent smell ?
Thanks for all,

Hi Anna,

We've carefully chosen a biodegradable digesting chemical for the trial that won't affect downstream treatment negatively. For where we're working, electricity isn't readily accessible, so we're actually using the Torp without a fan for our pilot. We are looking at natural ventilation options for the production version however, which will help the smell issue as well. We tried showing people how to add ash from cookstoves as a smell barrier during our first research phase and found it being used inconsistently because of how many different people are using the toilets, from children to the elderly. We've also found the chemical makes the toilet appear more sanitary as well as reducing odor, which is an important psychological benefit as well.

Using newspaper as a liner in the internal bucket is a great idea, and will probably save water and cleaning time.

thanks again for all your help with the project.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for your support!

There are a few reasons for Western toilets in this case - the main one is that we're mainly working with renters in urban poor areas, so they don't have the funds or ability to build and service pit latrines. In order to have a serviceable toilet with minimal installation costs we need to be above ground, hence the higher Western style toilet. Another reason is that the classic Western toilet style has some aspirational qualities attached to it, and we want this service to be something people are excited and proud to be part of.

So you have decided to take on sanitation in Ghana. Wow! I applaud you and wish you luck. Having lived there for 1.5 yrs bot in Accra, Tamale and many weeks in rural communities where I have had to "free range", I can confidently say Ghana has some of the worst sanitation in Africa.

My first question is why are you building western toilets vs. squat toilets? Also, can you tell me why hygiene practices are so poor in Ghana say in comparison to Burkina Faso where toilets in public transport yards are clean? What are the major barriers to behavior change?

Hello, this is Anna at Ecovita, which supplied the first toilet (Torp) for the first-phase piloting. There is no need to add chemicals to the toilets for odor issues. In fact, this could hinder biological processing. The toilets have 12-volt fans to make sure the toilet vent out and not into the room. If these are not in use, use a light sprinkling of coconut coir, shredded paper or wood ash or a piece of waste paper to each fecal deposit. Make sure the urine line is sloped downward and is rinsed occasionally with some water (even cooking water or old tea is fine). There is a water-activated enzyme we can now supply for the fecal composting that hastens the process and reduces the potential for odor. Also, for greater ease of emptying each feces bin, line the bin with a piece of newspaper or paper from shopping bags, etc. Sprinkle some coconut coir, dry leaves or ash on the bottom of the bin.
Best of luck with this important work.
